INTRODUCING JAMIESONS RUN ROTHWELL - August 2004

back
Jamiesons Run is proud to announce the release of its new icon wine Jamiesons Run Rothwell. The first release of this wine comes from the 2001 vintage and is a quintessential expression of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon – crafted by Jamiesons Run Senior Winemaker Andrew Hales. The 2001 Jamiesons Run Rothwell is already a gold medal winner (2003 Royal Hobart Wine Show – Gold, class 57 and 2003 Vintage Cellars National Wine Show – Gold, class 26). With it’s unique characters of Coonawarra Cabernet, the wine displays rich aromas of mint, ripe plum, spice and cedary oak. The palate is big and powerful with a sublime balance of fruit, oak and tannin. It is a wine that will mature for over a decade. Rothwell was sourced from mature vines growing on the Terra Rossa soil of the Coonawarra. Good conditions at flowering in 2001 enabled a moderate fruit set. A warm to hot January was followed by a warm vintage ensuring that the crop reached optimal ripeness. The cooler nights during this period helped to retain the rich, intense cool climate varietal characters and fine textured supple tannins typical of quality Coonawarra Cabernet. Exceptionally good parcels of fruit were crushed into a small rotary fermenter for a gentle seven-day ferment. During this period the juice was aeratively pumped over to assist the extraction of flavour and colour without extracting any harsh tannins and ensuring a harmonious balance. After completion of fermentation, the wine was pressed off the skins and racked into new and seasoned French and American oak for 24 months maturation. Senior Jamiesons Run Winemaker Andrew Hales then assessed each barrel individually, with only the barrels that were a quintessential expression of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon being used in the final blend. Finally the wine was aged in bottle for 12 months prior to release. The Story of Rothwell * Rothwell has been named after one of the original characters of the Coonawarra, William Rothwell Pounsett. A man who is believed to have been one of the first people to plant vines in the area that is now known as Coonawarra, and who was know as ‘Rothie’. Historical records from Coonawarra show that Rothie’s wife Sarah was sited as occupier and renter of land on the original Penola Fruit Colony, launched by John Riddoch, in the 1890’s. William Rothwell Pounsett is mentioned as the Postmaster in Penola, and as such, was the registrar of births in the district during the late 1880’s and 1890’s. The initials WRP could be seen on most births registered during that time. William and Sarah had around 20 acres of land in total and family records indicate that they planted around 10 acres with vines on the land that we now call Coonawarra. An innovative move in its day, the Rothwell family would have been amongst some of the earliest people to plant vines on the Terra Rossa soil. Today these original vineyards are part of Jamiesons Run. Rothie was one of the original characters of the Coonawarra and his main hobby was music. He played the violin, piano and the organ in the Church of England, Penola. He also taught brass bands in the township. Rothie passed away at his home in Coonawarra in the late 1930s. The family name Rothwell however has since been passed down through the generations. The last person to have this name was Max Rothwell Pounsett, the eighth person recorded to have the name in the family. The late Max Rothwell’s niece Robyn Pounsett currently works at Jamiesons Run and is the Great Grand Daughter of William Rothwell Pounsett. Robyn is delighted that the family name will now live on in the Jamiesons Run Rothwell Cabernet Sauvignon. “Rothwell” displays Jamiesons Run’s faith and commitment to Coonawarra. We believe it is a fitting tribute to “Rothie” and in time it will become a Coonawarra Classic. Jamiesons Run Rothwell will be available at Vintage Cellars, Fine Wine Outlets and On-premise Price: RRP $70 to
