Jamiesons Run - Coonawarra

INGLE BLOCK SUCCESS FROM THE 2001 VINTAGE - April 2004

back
Jamiesons Run releases two latest vintage premium single block wines – 2001 Jamiesons Run McShane’s Block Shiraz and 2001 Jamiesons Run Alexander’s Block Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1998, following an exceptional vintage in Coonawarra, a decision was made to release the McShane’s Block and Alexander’s Block wines for the first time. In 2000 the second vintage of the McShane’s Block was released. Following the 2001 vintage, the decision was made again to keep small parcels of Shiraz from the McShane’s Block and Cabernet Sauvignon from the Alexander’s Block for individual bottling. Both wines are already gold medal winners. The 2001 Jamiesons Run Alexander’s Block Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded gold at the 2003 Limestone Coast Wine Show (Class: 35); with the 2001 Jamiesons Run McShane’s Block achieving gold at the 2003 Royal Hobart Wine Show (Class: 66). The 2001 Jamiesons Run McShane’s Block Shiraz Purchased in 1962 by Jamiesons Run, McShane’s Block is a prime example of Coonawarra ‘Terra Rossa’ land. The Block totals 13.5 hectares in size and is situated just to the north of the Coonawarra Township, showing the ‘Terra Rossa’ over limestone soil profile that Coonawarra is famous for. According to Jamiesons Run Senior Winemaker Andrew Hales the 2001 Jamiesons Run McShane’s Block Shiraz is a classic Coonawarra Shiraz at it’s best. Andrew’s tasting notes read, “A deep red with purple hues in the glass, the exception depth of colour of this wine hints at its exceptional quality. This medium bodied wine shows dark plum, blackberry, warm earth and spicy oak aromas and flavours with hints of eucalypt and mint. Supple silky tannins form the basis of this finely structured, balanced Shiraz.” After crushing and de-stemming, parcels from the McShane’s vineyard were fermented in small rotary fermenters and pressed to barrel. Fermentation was completed in new French and American oak barriques, with a portion allocated to seasoned oak barrels. After 24 months barrel maturation this wine was blended and bottled. The 2001 Jamiesons Run Alexander’s Block Cabernet Sauvignon Acquired in 1970 and planted in 1981, Alexander’s Block is situated to the north of the Coonawarra Township adjacent to McShane’s Block. The 50 acres of Alexander’s Block has stonier ground than McShane’s which helps reduce vine vigour and keep yields down at 3-4 tonnes per hectare. From the heart of the Terra Rossa strip, Alexander’s Block again represents the unique union of soil, grape and climate that has made Coonawarra the home of Australian Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine has vibrant deep crimson wine with rich, ripe dark berry and wood smoke aromas. Cassis, black cherry, mulberry and cedary oak flavours are present on the palate. This 2001 Jamiesons Run Alexander’s Block Cabernet Sauvignon has a firm balanced structure with supple texture and elegance, balances with fine ripe tannins. “The warm 2001 vintage and fine spring weather in Coonawarra produced compact and perfectly even bunches in the Alexander’s vineyard,” according to winemaker Andrew Hales. “This vineyard was one of the earliest to ripen during the extremely hot January. The fruit produced had intense full flavours and fine ripe tannins.” After crushing and de-stemming, small parcels of this Cabernet Sauvignon were fermented separately and partially barrel fermented. The wine was then matured in new and one to two year old French oak barriques before blending and bottling. 2001 Jamiesons Run McShane’s Block Shiraz Suggested retail price: $34 - $36 Suggested Food: Beef Bourguignon served with small boiled potatoes topped with freshly chopped parsley and steamed baby carrots Cellaring: Will reward with careful cellaring for 5-10 years 2001 Jamiesons Run Alexander’s Block Cabernet Sauvignon Suggested retail price: $34 - $36 Suggested Food: Honey mint glazed leg of lamb with minte
