Andrew Hales' career path has lead him from the Barossa, Clare and Hunter Valley to the vineyards of France, Sicily, Tunisia and the former Soviet Republic of Moldova, culminating in his appointment to the senior winemaking role at Jamiesons Run
Born in 1962, as a teenager Andrew made holiday trips to Australia's great wineries with his father and it was here that his education in wine began.
At university, Andrew studied Agricultural Science before completing a Graduate Diploma in oenology at the renowned Roseworthy College.
Prior to studying at Roseworthy Andrew gained vintage experience in New Zealand. Then, during the 1996 vintage, he worked at Mount Pleasant Winery in the Hunter Valley before a further stint at Tasmania's Pipers Brook winery.
Not content to concentrate on developing his talents only in Australia, Andrew elected to continue his career in Moldova. With a translator by his side, he saw his third vintage of 1996 as the head of operations at the Cazaclia Winery. Here Andrew was able to introduce fresh ideas from southern hemisphere winemaking, and revolutionise production at Cazaclia.
Between 1997 and 1999 Andrew spent three further harvests in the Old World.
In 1999, Andrew was recruited by Wolf Blass wines to work at McLaren Vale and then in 2000 returned for vintage in the Barossa Valley, before moving into the role of Senior Winemaker at Jamiesons Run in November 2000.
With an unrivalled blend of experience gathered in the Old and New Worlds, Andrew Hales is uniquely qualified to make the wines of Jamiesons Run express the finest character of Coonawarra and its sought-after terra rossa soil.
