Sophie Hannah was appointed winemaker at Jamiesons Run within only three years of her graduation from university.
Living in Adelaide, the heartland of Australian winemaking, and with an epicurean passion for great food and wine, Sophie discovered the possibility of winemaking as a career at The University of Adelaide. While Sophie was at the university completing a science degree she decided to continue her studies by undertaking The Graduate Diploma in Oenology at the Waite campus.
Fresh from her studies, Sophie was employed by BRL Hardy. Working at their Houghton Winery Sophie developed her skills in quality assessment in the vineyard.
The next step was a logical progression, traveling to France for the 1999 vintage at La Baume. Here she examined and discovered some of the skills and styles the French use in winemaking.
On Sophie's return to Australia she joined the winemaking team at Katnook Estate as Assistant Winemaker. She was delighted to be back in the region again and relished the chance to work with the high quality fruit from Coonawarra and surrounding vineyards.
Building on her experience at Houghton, Sophie was involved with extensive varietal tastings, trials and vineyard fruit assessment, learning a great deal from an experienced Coonawarra Winemaking team at Katnook Estate.
In November 2000, the position of Winemaker at Jamiesons Run became available and with her wide-ranging experience both at home and abroad, Sophie secured her second role in Coonawarra. Sophie now focuses on maintaining Jamiesons Run wines through fermentation, post-fermentation, blending and bottling.
